History
Dr. Francis Weld and his wife Fannie envisioned this beautiful little community when they purchased the 364-acre tract in 1888. Eventually, it was officially converted into a residential subdivision and the stone gates were constructed at its entrance in 1905. With strong European influences, Interlaken was named after it's Swiss counterpart, "Interlochen", which means "between the lakes." They proceeded to name all the avenues after English Lakes, and cross streets named after islands in the Hebrides (west coast of Scotland).
In no time at all, Interlaken developed into an artsy community, attracting writers, artists and other creative types who were looking for a quiet, inspiring place to live and work.
