Originally part of Shrewsbury Township, Howell was incorporated in 1801. At that time it included areas that later formed parts of both Brick and Wall Townships, and Farmingdale. Schools in Howell Township
The Howell Township Public Schools cater for students from kindergarten to eighth grade. Students of grades 9-12 may attend high schools in the Freehold Regional High School District, or apply for one of the vocational schools in Monmouth County. A private day school, Monmouth Academy, serves students from pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade and St. Veronica's Catholic school accepts students for grade K-8.
